State victories create dilemma for abortion foes

Opponents who have chipped away at abortion with state-level restrictions are facing a dilemma in some of the places where they have been most successful: Do they continue with that approach or seek more dramatic policies that risk court rulings that could undo previous gains? For the last several decades, anti-abortion groups have focused on ( Read more... )

Mary Kay Culp is a slimeball. If I am remembering right, she has been charged in a couple of abortion-related crimes. I wish that the news agencies that quote her would make sure to add that to her description....

That said, I'm looking forward to this November's elections in Kansas. When our incumbent governor has to have his Lt. Governor give him a $500,000 loan so his war chest is enough over the opponent to look good, and yet is either barely ahead or actually behind in the polls, that makes me smile!

Fuck all these people and their relentless *bullshite* about abortion. I am so sick of fighting this fight over and over and over and over.

It sometimes seems like the only state in the USA that still treats women like human beings instead of mindless incubators is California.

New York is still pretty cool as well, iirc.

Fun fact: New York was actually one of the first states in the US to fully legalize abortion. Prior to Roe v Wade, it was one of only 4 states where abortion was legal on request (without an extenuating circumstance like rape, incest, or health risks). (The others were WA, AL, and HI.) I was fortunate to be able to travel to New York to get a safe, legal abortion there in 1972, a full year before Roe v Wade, so I will always be a fan of NY and its sensible abortion laws.

It was SO different back then. No demonstrators, no harassment, no ugliness. *sigh* I HATE it when I hear what some women have to go through these days.

Washington State also has pretty solid reproductive rights laws; it's one of the handful that's rated A+ on NARAL (CA is also rated the same; Oregon is rated A -- yay west coast!). I'm not sure what became of it, but I remember last year seeing something about the legislature moving to expand abortion protection in response to what was going on in other states.

I really like Wendy Davis and I hope she wins in Texas. That would be huge.
