The Top 10 Most Racist/Privileged Things White Feminists Did in 2013

10. When 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis, the young actress and Oscar nominee, was called a cunt by The Onion in a poorly thought out satire attempt, white feminists decided that not defending her made sense because cunt shouldn’t be a bad word anyway and whatever, it was a joke ok? Anyway, it’s not like white feminists are in the habit of defending ( Read more... )

You know, this is like the first time I saw someone properly use SJW on the net in a long time. Sadly that word went on the way of Mary Sue.

Yeah, now I am super wary of them. Especially after the bullshit and general silence over Quvenzhane being called a cunt. Especially after they went after Beyonce for saying the phrase 'bow down, bitches' in demo version of xxxFlawless that prompted her having to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on the track to explain it.

Also, I guess the list was written before Ani DiFranco made that faux-apology and her 'tears' on how Black women ruined the "meaningful retreat" because of some "silly history fact" about the place of the retreat.

And it was like $1500 or something to attend, on top of that.

Are there any decent feminist spaces online that are a good place to learn more about intersectionality/don't just focus on a narrow segment of women? (doesn't have to be a discussion forum, even just places where I can read up on this stuff).

So many of the blogs I come across are a lot of arguing about this sort of pop culture stuff which isn't really my thing (not sure how to word this, I mean the long drawn out arguments over why this or that pop star or actress is or isn't a feminist), and so many of the non-feminist left wing spaces I've found online are dudebro central.

thanks! I'm a socialist myself, and don't mind UK-centric stuff, and I think we face some similar issues here in the U.S. (our conservatives sure love Thatcherism...)

*adds #whatever to the list*

White Feminists calling for boycotts of Pacific Rim. I follow several anime-related tumblers, and saw some very interesting commentary about that shared by several Asian-American feminist bloggers. The general consensus was being offended at White Feminists decrying the character of Mako (a non-sexualized and non-stereotypical Asian woman) for not fitting into their Western cultural values. Several of them discussed Japanese culture, and the importance of Gimu (Piety) and Giri (Duty) as core values.

I had no idea about this. Do you by chance still have the links to your Asian American feminist bloggers who talked about this?

Omg thank you. I really liked the one where the blogger says, "Soooo, when the male character respects authority, that's cool, but when an Asian woman does the same thing, OMG UNFEMINIST."
