I swear there was a short story and I'll be buggered if I remember the title of it besides that it was written in the Harlem Renaissance but it was about this white couple back in the early 1900s or 1910s and they "adopt" a set of black teenagers or young 20-somethings and dress them up and make over them like a set of dolls / pets

and then are genuinely shocked when the two leave with money like who could have possibly thought their cute little display-toys actually had autonomy and would leave after ~all they'd done for them~
