Going Home To Newtown One Year Later

I still can't believe it's only been a year since it happened.

“And I told them I don’t want any workers walking off the job with a brick in their pocket.”

All I can say is I'm glad she thought of it before someone decided to use a piece of Sandy Hook to fuel their 15 minutes of fame and their wallet.

I think the wicked weather was about the best thing that could happen today. It was bad enough that there was very little local traffic other than rush for milk and gas and probably got majority of out of towners to stay away.

But wasn't so bad that it was memorably awful either. it's just snow.

This is an anniversary that should be approached with respect and absolutely on the terms of the town and the families. I do respect that the media have agreed to stay away and not make a circus of it; not that I expected it, but I was dreading some awful mawkish kind of thing and I'm glad no one's gone for it.

The lighting of a single candle, a thoughtful moment, a silent prayer. Those are the things that are appropriate now.

I still have a very hard time thinking about what happened there because it could happen here or anywhere. My heart goes out to the people who were directly impacted. I'm glad that the wishes of those impacted were respected and that they were given peace and privacy.

maybe it's because I work in education, but I feel like Newtown hit me in a way that other shootings didn't. I think I have been desensitized to lot of the violence on the news, but Newtown is something I haven't been able to read or hear much about without getting really emotional. I've been changing the radio station a lot when driving to the school I'm teaching at this week when NPR starts talking about the anniversary. And I've talked with other educators who feel the same way, because we all wonder what would happen if it was our school. I would like to think I would be brave enough to do the best I could to keep my kids safe, but I honestly don't know...
