In your comment, did you mean Francis rather than Benedict?

The whole interview reminded me of one of the my mother's friends who left the priesthood over many of the problems discussed here. The one that really pushed him to leave was the accumulation and misuse of wealth. He spend more time being told to raise money than actually working.

There's several different very small churches in the area that can no longer afford a full time pastor, so he's shared among all of them. It's Tuesday, he's Episcopalian. Wednesday, Congregationalist. he's making a housecall... whatever is needed.

Leo's sort of most dramatic example, but I am in what's theoretically a heavily Catholic area of the US. But "lapsed Catholic" is probably more accurate for many of the same reasons. Heavily liberal area, so the stance on abortion and birth control, really a deal breaker for many people.

This was a very interesting read, thank you! I am one of those people who are (cautiously) optimistic about Francis. Very interesting to read about someone who'd been trying to reform before Francis came around. Küng sounds like an interesting person (his ideas about assisted suicide reminded me of Terry Pratchett), I should try and see if I can find one of his books. :)
