Stoking Fire: Meet the Men Behind ‘Six Reasons to Not Send Your Daughter to College’

Nov 21, 2013 23:08

Late last summer, two ultra-conservative Louisiana Catholics, Rayland Alleman and William Gil, got their 15 minutes of fame when they published a blog post entitled “Six Reasons to Not Send Your Daughter to College.” The essay charged that, among other things, institutions of higher education foster experimentation and openness to both new ideas ( Read more... )

Ugh. I spent way too much time on that blog when that article first game out, mostly on the wife's stuff. Made me sad. Especially considering I know too many people who think like that and women who deny themselves things they like (even as innocent as a tv show) because "it wouldn't be proper" (someone I know once whispered to me a 'devilish' admission that she really liked forensics (my major) and watching Dexter, but begged me not to tell her husband. When I asked why that would be a problem she got white and said "He doesn't think it's appropriate for a mother and Sunday school teacher to watch such things." Her dream was to do forensic nursing and help women who had been assaulted, but her husband "didn't approve" of it because those are things she shouldn't be exposed to as a mother. Ugh)

God places the wife with her husband as a help-meet, to support him, encourage him in his responsibilities, and be his cheerleader, his biggest fan. She has the ability to build her husband up to be a great servant of God and society. She must ( ... )

oh, welp. i've clearly been doing this marriage shit wrong for the last eight years. my husband is a lovely, wonderful, incredible man, but he is the opposite of religious and what we do for society is done quietly, not for praise.

showing me how I have gotten out of line

That first paragraph makes me sad.

The quote about a wife's place being to uplift her husband makes me sad and angry because I have seen far too many things posted and shared on facebook from supposedly progressive folks about how women have this amazing ability/gift from god to uplift and support their man. And how women should get over this shelfish me, me, me attitude feminism has encouraged and just give their man a foot rub and STFU when he has a stressful day. Ugh. Excuse me, I need to go throw up now...

And the man's role is to constantly criticize and discipline his wife and lord over her because otherwise her weak will would be ruled by sin.

What I love about the whole 'weak willed' thing (and by love, I mean OMGHATE) is that they believe women need to dress modestly (and so on) so as not to "cause someone to sin". So if women are capable of inciting others (men) to sin, or be weak, or whatever...and men can't control themselves...

How is it women are the weak ones?

I feel like I just read an excerpt from The Handmaid's Tale. Good Lord, this is terrifying.

She must not manipulate him by withholding intimacy.

God forbid a woman just not want sex, right? Ugh.

I wonder if he is one of people who believe there's no such thing as marital rape.

I doubt he believes there's such thing as rape to begin with.

Ah, God save us from your followers indeed.

Whenever I hear or read this kind of guff I am reminded immediately of Harry Enfield. And how fucking ridiculous this viewpoint truly is.

Women! Know your limits.
