I have to admit, the comments at the source are pretty funny.

There's a few wanna be trolls. And they aren't very good at it. Or maybe they're really just idiots. I can never tell.

Congrats, people of Hawaii!

Sen. Sam Slom, the chamber's only Republican, said the government should stay out of legislating marriage. "People have differences, and you can't legislate morality. You can try, but you can't do it," he said.

If only everyone felt this way.

ETA: Guess I should clarify, since I missed the part about Slom actually voting against the legislation when I first read through the article, that I agree with Slom's statement that the government should stop trying to legislate the morality of individuals. For me that means supporting legislation that grants marriage equality and protects the rights of individuals regardless of their gender orientation and preferences.

So... he basically justified voting against the legalization of same sex marriage by citing one of the best arguments IN FAVOR OF IT?

Way to go, Sam Slom. You bigoted asshat bag of donkey dicks, you!

Yeah, I read his statement and at first I thought "Yay! Finally, a politician saying the government needs to stop trying to legislate the morality of individuals! If more people start feeling this way it will influence the way we look at and tackle not just LGBTQ issues, but issues such as drug abuse and alcoholism, mental illness, prostitution, poverty, domestic abuse, rape, attire and adornment, abortion, religious intolerance, religion in government and public schools, etc., as well." Then he took that idea and ran 180° from the direction I would go with it. It's left me with the impression that he is one of those people who feels his rights are being abridged just because he isn't allowed to force his own rigid version of "Christian" morality and thinking on all of society. If his morality is adversely affected by acknowledging the humanity of and granting basic human rights to non-hetero adults the problem is either within the teachings of his church or himself.
