My grandmother and I were watching the news and they were talking about the Redskins and other teams that are considered offensive. When Cleveland's logo popped up, my grandmother was amazed that they still manage to get away with it ( ... )

I am just so, so tired of this debate. I literally cannot understand why anyone would be against this, and I'm equally sick and tired of being called "squ*w" by anyone who disagrees with me.

Meanwhile, unemployment on the Blackfoot Reservation is 69%.

Even granting that the Indians and the Redskins are directly offensive and demeaning to Native people, what will this do to combat poverty, alcoholism, diabetes, heart disease, suicide, teen pregnancy, unemployment, rape, murder and drug abuse currently plaguing so much of the Native American community? Real problems. Serious problems. Problems that deserve much more attention than this malarkey. I mean, what is more offensive? That a football team has wanted to associate itself with the legendary strength, stoicism and bravery of Native American warriors, but use an archaic and offensive word to describe them or that a child born on a Federal reservation has a 4 times greater chance of having fetal alcohol syndrome than one born elsewhere? Let's see some clever macros illustrating that fact, National Congress of American Indians.

This just seems like pissing in the wind.

Because they can't push to have this dealt with AT THE SAME TIME as dealing with all those other issues.

And this casual demeaning of Native Americans *only adds* to the other issues, as it demeans and devalues them in the eyes of non-Indians.

Surely you can see that this is one small part of a bigger picture.

Apparently they can't because they aren't pushing it. At least as far as I can see. Sure, everyone wrings their hands and tut-tuts over the situation, but in any serious sense? The real problems are and have been off the radar for-ev-er. Where do we see this in the media?? Shouldn't Native people be marching on Washington every single week?

Why don't you go tell them that? Sheesh. I follow a couple different Native pages on FB. They're dealing with a *ton* of shite, every day.

You've got to know you're only hearing bout this because pro sports = big bucks.

What really gets me is that people get so fucking *pissy* about this, as if changing the team name will somehow *personally affect them in horrible ways*.

Jayzus - you all survived the Cardinals moving out of St. Louis and *black men* being allowed to pay along with whites and *women* getting their own teams.... I think you dumb-ass sports fans will survive this.

The Washington Bullets had to change their name to Wizards. Why's it any skin off your back to change Redskins to something else?

This.

A few years ago, the University of Illinois entered the 21st century by giving up their creepy, racist "Chief Illiniwek" mascot with his fake "Indian" dancing, Plains Indian regalia, and cheesy "warpaint", and guess what? Nobody died, the campus buildings didn't crumble away, and the sky actually did NOT fall in! I'm sure all the other teams with offensive mascots and/or names will survive quite nicely as well.

Thank you! At the end of the day, this is sports. Nobody is going to die or lose their job if the name changes. Literally the only thing that will happen is manufacturers change their template. Big fucking deal!

Glad to see the statements of the affected being given more weight in this article than those who want the status quo. If I have to read another whiny statement by sports fans about why they're entitled to demean a vulnerable population (directly following arguments by native people, you know, to keep it "balanced")....well, I'll close the tab and fume like I usually do.
