Shutdown coverage fails Americans

U.S. news reports are largely blaming the government shutdown on the inability of both political parties to come to terms. It is supposedly the result of a "bitterly divided" Congress that "failed to reach agreement" (Washington Post) or "a bitter budget standoff" left unresolved by "rapid-fire back and forth legislative maneuvers" (New York Times)

Over here in Denmark the media is calling it pretty much the way it is. They're saying that the republicans in congress are guilty of holding up debate and negotiations, of tripping up reasonable legislation and that it is embarrassing. Of course there's also the bandwagon journalism that just repeats what's on the tickers out of the US.

Balanced reporting doesn't mean you treat both sides as equally valid. It means you do your absolute best not to inject your own biases into the mix and report on what is happening. Not all opinions are created equally, and it's deceitful to suggest they are.
