A government shutdown next week would jeopardize the paychecks of more than 800,000 federal workers who could be told to stay home. Members of Congress also would keep working, deciding which of their staff members to send home and which to keep at the office.

Wouldn't that require them to have STARTED at some point?

A House Republican aide said many conservatives would have a hard time justifying “making them whole for work they didn’t do.”

Sweet, let's not pay Congress. I can't justify making them whole for the work they are consistently not doing. Seems fair.

Since many of the State Governments rely on Federal funding, their may be closures at the state level, too, with paycheck issues compounded by the fact that even if Congress approves back pay for Federal workers, it may not allow the funding which would cover state workers.
