Government shutdown: Again? Seriously?

Sep 19, 2013 12:02

"We've seen the movie before," Sen. John McCain said recently on CNN's "New Day."

Oh, how right you are, Senator.

When Bill Murray's clock radio goes off at 6 a.m. and Sonny and Cher's tune "I've got you Babe" plays in the '90s classic "Groundhog Day," perhaps the radio should have been tuned into the latest news from Washington.

Get a job for the government, they said. It's job security, they said. Oddly enough, Congress who gets the most vacation days than probably any job in the country (66% of the year, really?), will still get their fat paychecks every 2 weeks.

How about Republicans stop trying to win, and do what the system was built for: compromise!

Agree with you 100%. That's what spouse did, became a soldier for the job security. Now these assholes are going to hold government funding hostage, which includes spouse's paycheck. We have no family to help us all the way on the other side of the country from home. How are we going to keep food on the table for our son if this becomes a long shutdown? I'm starting to itch for a bucket of tar and a bag of feathers...

Yeah, we're Government personnel posted overseas, but not in Government-owned housing. I have NO IDEA what happens to us if there's a shut-down. Forget all the essential/non-essential personnel BS; I'm worried about keeping the lights and the water on and keeping the kids able to get to school and back every day. It's not like we can go live in my mom's basement, considering that's an ocean away from us. Hell, she couldn't even send us food since we rely on the APO to get our mail.

That's even worse. Hope this shut-down doesn't happen.

OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

"President Obama, Harry Reid, will scream and holler that the mean, nasty Republicans are threatening to shut down the government," Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz said on CNN in August.

BECAUSE THEY ARE.

Classic trick, though -- predict the incredibly predictable, rational response, and smear it in advance with words denoting senseless hysteria! BWHAHAHA, now what will they do?!

*is sick*

Let's be fuckin' honest here. CONGRESS is threatening to shut down the government. CONGRESS as a WHOLE, through republican dominated times, through democrat dominated times, hasn't passed a budget since Clinton was in office. We keep having these government shutdown threats and furloughs and sequestrations and we don't know how much money we have or where they want to spend it. NO ONE KNOWS, because there isn't a budget.

EDIT: I'm not saying that the Republicans are NOT acting like whiny children over the whole thing. Because they are. I am saying that the executive branch and the other half of the legislative branch aren't blameless.

So basically everybody knows it's a bad idea to go down this road but some stupid ideologues have decided that a government shutdown is preferable to having to deal with the fact that the ACA is not going away. Again.

The state of politics in the US right now is just sickening. It makes me tired.

Seeing exasperated!Rin gave me a bit of happiness in this really horrifying post.

I think that sums it up perfectly. I don't know if it's just because I'm ~too naive but I don't see why it's so fucking hard to compromise. Stop with the "FUCK YOU, I LIKE THE RED SOX"-sports mentality and just figure something out together.

Government has two parties to make sure that one group of people doesn't stay in power and override the views of others; it's meant to elicit compromise and a balance. It's not supposed to be a competition!

I like Rachel Maddow's idea of naming these manufactured crises like the way we name tropical storms/hurricanes. I forget what letter we'd be on now, though.
