So on the topic of the Redskins, Slate ran an article today containing a quote that I want to marry: “Changing the way we talk is not political correctness run amok. It reflects an admirable willingness to acknowledge others who once were barely visible to the dominant culture, and to recognize that something that may seem innocent to you may be painful to others.” (Source). I thought it was a very well-written piece on why "redskins" is a damaging name even if redskin is not a slur or is a positive term.

Also, Dan Snyder is an asshole, because it is impossible to overstate that point.

Yes, the Slate article needs to be posted, too; it's glorious.

They won't change it just like the Cleveland Indians won't change their name.

I really don't get how people like that seriously don't expect to get called on just making shit like that up. Like, do you really think no one is going to realize it? That no Aleut or Inuit people will hear it and know you are full of shit?

... or is just that it doesn't matter? Which sadly I sometimes think is the case. The original lie gets so much more attention and circulation than when it's pointed out to be complete made up bullshit?

So many white people that talk about their great-great-great-great grandmother being a Cherokee Princess~ basically think that some little bit of family apocrypha makes them members to some special club. It's that sense of entitlement that comes with most types of appropriation. These asshats generally don't realize that Native American, Inuit and First Nations peoples and communities still exist and have a diverse, living culture.

Or, he's just dumb as fuck. Either way.

I guess it just struck me the details he included that are clearly lies, not even "I was told this about my family history so it must be true" type things. Like claiming to have lived on a reservation in Alaska. I mean, that is (apparently) just a straight up lie. His explanation of being a Chief seems to fit the ignorant and arrogant "I think that word can mean anything I want it to mean!" But you know if you never actually lived on a reservation in Alaska.

yeah, there are times when family histories that have been passed on and which people sincerely believed really do turn out to be wrong. But this is clearly not one of those cases.

(my aunt and uncle have been doing a family genealogy and it turns out my great grandfather was likely completely full of shit with regards to some of our family history)
