"Genetic defect" is pretty broad. Some genetic defects, a person can live a nice, fulfilling life. Others, they don't make it past the first day out of the womb. And then there's the little fact that the very people supporting these abortion bills in the name of "life" won't do a damn thing to help families with healthy children, much less ones who are going to need millions of dollars in treatment. I'd be a lot more inclined to believe their rhetoric about being "pro-life" if they actually acted like they care about living, breathing human beings instead of gestational, non-breathing human fetuses. The Republican plan of cutting social services to the bone while forcing women to have children they don't want or can't afford reminds me of nothing so much as Nicolae Ceaușescu.

THIS. Where's all the support for families whose children were born with Down Syndrome or severe congenital heart defects? If they don't have health insurance, well, fuck them, right? They just shouldn't have gotten pregnant in the first place. And that's to say nothing of defects incompatible with life like anencephaly.

Anencephaly is so heartbreaking. A couple of friends of mine from high school knew they were going to have a baby with that condition, and they chose to carry to term for religious reasons (which I didn't agree with, but respected their decision). The baby lived for 18 hours, but they had some beautiful pictures taken with her and all of the family got to meet her before she passed.
