I was all like "Onion!" but...it isn't.

Are we just assuming al Qaeda or whoever doesn't have $85? Because pretty sure they could swing that. And it's the entire point of all this security to fight the terrorists, right?

Maybe it's a ruse? The people who pay this are actually put under extra scrutiny?

RT.com is a Russian propaganda outlet. This shit has been all over tumblr, but no one reads the part where you don't just pay $85 to become a trusted traveler. There's an intense vetting process for that, initiated by the trusted traveler application. And you're still screened, you're just put in the first class screening line so you don't have to wait as long.

lol I thought rt.com was Reuters. I have no idea why, come to think of it...

Thanks for the clarification!

Even with the vetting process, this doesn't sit totally right with me. While I was traveling last week, I joked with my husband that we had to take off our "shoes, belts and dignity" at the security checkpoint. How (not) wonderful to know that for "only" $85, I could buy a small piece of that dignity back!

This move may be something the TSA has a right to do as a business and it seems built to keep security intact, but that doesn't mean it's not shitty.

MODS: Can we have a disclaimer put on this or something? People are going to read it and not see the comments partially disproving it.

So they're basically just admitting that TSA screenings are pretty much useless, now?
