George Zimmerman, who has been in hiding since he was acquitted of murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, emerged to help rescue a family who was trapped in an overturned vehicle, police said today

Yeah, I'm wondering if he has a police scanner or a friend in the department who contacted him. He was just waiting for someone to need help so he could swoop in and play the hero.
I'd be willing to bet on police scanner. It's not hard to get an app to do the job, and even if he wasn't looking for a PR moment like this, it fits with his general apparent desire to be a vigilante hero/cop.
Like heterosexism where everyone's straight until a magazine cover says otherwise, if race isn't declared, we're to assume the "default" of white. Right?
Number one, I believe he's doing this solely for good press so he doesn't feel like he needs to be in hiding anymore.
Number two, maybe he shouldn't have helped them out of the overturned car. I mean, I wasn't there, so maybe they weren't injured at all. But if they were, sometimes you can make a person's injuries worse if you move them improperly. Unless the car was on fire or in danger of exploding, the best thing he could've done (if they were injured) was let them be and waited with them until the police came with a cell phone.
But yeah, like someone said upthread, I guess he hasn't lost his boner for being fake police/law enforcement.
Exactly. First Aid Rule 1 - don't move someone who's injured unless there's some sort of immediate threat, and even then be wary of your odds of adding to the number of people in need of rescue or the body count.
Really? I think that this and the Trayvon Martin killing unfortunately stem from the same "good guy" complex. Seems to me more to be an aspect of his personality, one that a lot of people share but few are self-reflective about enough in order to ensure they channel it only into good things... that "jump first, ask questions later" mentality of feeling like he is a force for goodness and justice in the world, where he gets the idea that his motives are always pure and so he can't do wrong, or harm

I kind of get the feeling that he's going to be wrapped up in another (hopefully less-profile, and less deadly) case like this in the future. Because he does not know when to quit.

(P.S. A nice big bolt of lightning would also work for me.)

Was this a white family?

More simply - if this wasn't a white (or at least someone that Zimmerman would identify with) family, would Zimmerman have bothered?
