Yea, I just watched something on that yesterday. It really is a shame.
I'm in a facebook group for expats where quite a few of the members live in UAE and love it. As a result, they get really defensive when issues like these are brought up.
It's annoying because they typically give remarks like, "Oh well, this isn't the west and you have to follow their laws..." and proceed to ride on the victim blaming train. "She shouldn't have been socializing with men, she wasn't careful..." etc.
Fucking ridiculous. Jayzus, men suck. And men who wave a banner of morality and religion to uphold their 'traditional' asshat, women-hating ways suck even more.
It's a consumerist wasteland and modernised in all the wrong ways, none of the right ones.
You have summarized perfectly my exact thoughts when I went to Dubai a few years ago. I never want to go back, that place seems devoid of any real soul.
