At least five people have been killed in devastating floods gripping the western Czech Republic. The disaster caused by torrential rains has prompted the evacuation of metro stations, several hospitals and the zoo in the capital

They've been working on the flood defenses on the Moselle on both the Luxembourg and the German sides (where we live) for the past year and still, it's flooding badly. The roads are in a state, the riverbanks are eroded... *despairs* It feels often like they're one step behind, esp when it's been raining almost constantly for the past month+. We're up the hill, but the road... *sighs*
Have the flood defenses not improved the situation during a flood? I live right behind the "Deutsches Eck", where the Mosel flows into the Rhine and the flood situation over here has been more strained ever since everybody else has implemented flood defenses. And of course the island is swarming with "flood tourists" already *ugh*
Not here. It seems to just make it worse, but then again, all it seems like they're doing is a whole load of nothing. On the Luxembourg side, it doesn't look like they've made any progress for months. They put in piping beside the Moselle (for what reason, idk) and were supposed to build up the banks and put a river wall, but it keeps flooding so nothing... German side... I can't even see anything being done at all, tbh. The river floods worst around the Moselle/Sûr/(other river which I don't remember the name, near Trier) junction, affecting the wildlife and tourists alike. (trailer park just on the river near Wasserliesch has been flooded since last fall, along with associated parking

Wow, I never knew that the flood over there is so severe as well. Where I live, the Mosel is more or less just a footnote in regards to the flood since the Rhine is usually more damaging.
But the situation in Eastern and Southern Germany is so horrible. Just saw live footage from Passau and it brought back some memories from the "Jahrhunderthochwasser" of December 1993. I just hope that the politicians don't just use this tragedy to get some brownie points for the upcoming election, but rather provide funds for the reconstruction.
