Be very careful using Russia Today as a source. They're prone to some pretty speculative claims.

Snopes, as is often the case, digs a little deeper.

Came here to say the same thing.

I have added Snopes as an additional source

I've seen variations of this article, or parts of it floating around today. I chose Russia Today since it was the most concise. (it covers most points and is easily digested)

effectively bars federal courts from being able to halt the sale or planting of GMO or GE crops and seeds, no matter what health consequences from the consumption of these products may come to light in the future

I just can't. I'm not among those who think that GM organisms are inherently evil, but still--this is a relatively new thing, so maybe we should do some long-term research on it and make sure it's a-okay? And make sure we haven't told our future selves "Nope, you can't take GMO seed off the market even though you've confirmed it causes cancer-AIDS" .

EDIT: above comments source shows a set expiration on the bill, which is good. I still don't like it though.

Part of the reason this pisses me off so much is I think there is a future in GMOs, and I'm worried Monsanto's shenanigans will permanently sour public opinion on them, a la Chernobyl and nuclear power. That, and the gross conflict of interest and pushing of profit over safety, but tbh that's so prevalent it barely even ticks my anger-meter anymore.

The article itself says one year.

... and his other option was to not sign the bill, and therefore have no continuing resolution and shut the whole government down. I hate Monsanto, don't get me wrong. But as a Federal worker and the only wage-earner for a family only eats and keeps the lights on if the government is working (along with at least a hundred thousand other families much like mine...), I can't say I don't think he made the right call.

That's why I just can't blame Obama for signing the bill, and think the shock and disgust over him signing it is unwarranted.

I will proportion lots of blame on Senator Blunt and lobbyists though. I wish these stupid riders couldn't be attached to unrelated bills.

Yeah, I don't blame him when he signs a huge bill with shitty little provisions inserted by shitty little congresspeople.

I've heard this same story from several sources and it sounds both believable and depressing. It's a picture-perfect example of the everyday collusion between powerful corporate entities and the major political parties. They don't even mention here how Monsanto isn't a Republican donor, but donates pretty equally to both parties.

Side note: it never fails to amaze me that when some people see an article saying, "Obama signs MONSANTO PROTECTION ACT," they immediately jump in to justify why OBAMA did it. It's not a referendum on his moral character...it's important news about corruption and out-of-control corporate power that we should be aware of!

Yes, and? We're aware. We can also say that it was this or the VAWA goes down in flames. Most of us are actually able to like the President *and* still absorb news at the same time.

The defense is that he didn't sign "the Monsanto Protection Act" he signed the resolution that continued to pay federal workers, and the Violence Against Women Act BOTH of which included this shit rider.
