I wish I was surprised.

I also wish people understood that "teach men not to rape" doesn't mean sit everyone down and tell them "Don't rape anybody, ok?" but rather working to foster a deeper understanding of respect and consent in our culture as a whole... But that involves more words than I think most of these people know.

From the earlier article about the Steubenville case, and how nobody seemed to consider it a problem, clearly people need to be educated on what qualifies as consent.

THIS. I've heard people describe doing things to other people that sounded a whole lot like rape to me, but they literally seemed to have no idea that that was sexual assault. If you had just said to them, "Hey, don't rape anyone," they would have been like, "Duh, what kind of person do you think I am?" when as a matter of fact they were rapists without understanding that.

I've had almost exactly the same thing happen to me. I was arguing with a conservative commenter over at Ta Nehisi Coates's place about gun control and women's safety, and the asshole wished rape on me (not in so many words). It took my breath away for a moment, and then I just got mad. Which is progress; a few years ago, that sort of thing would have been really triggering for me.

*hugs*

People are sick, I don't know how anyone could ever wish that on anyone.

I'm not shocked, but it's really disgusting how many people are doing this type of thing, not just to her but any women on the internet with an opinion or thought. Like, wtf? I want to know who these men are, I want them identified.

BTW. I never understand peoples arguments "well, criminals won't listen", people do realize that these laws are put in place to help put away criminals. I'm just always confused by that argument. I mean, if you knew a victim OF ANY CRIME would you be okay that the person who hurt them was wondering the streets and could come after you, or someone else you know?! NO. Ugh. People just ERGH!!!!!!!!

Yeah, there are only a few men in my life that I trust in any kind of way. It's really sad but I do not feel safe around men, especially groups of 3 or more of them. Men do stupid shit when they are congregated in groups.
