...who will still be a "relatively popular president," Gingrich added.

So now they're finally going to stop pretending that somehow it's a fact he'll go down in history as the worst President ever?

Ten to one bet they're going to spin it as "he was horrible and destroyed Amurica, but conned the populace into ~loving him via sekret Kenyan Muslim superpowers."

I'm putting my money on this. When his rating are relatively low (basically any time he slipped this past year), there was all this gloating about how terrible he was and how people KNEW it and he was going to lose bigtime.

When his numbers are up, it's because it's a cult of personality and people (the same people who KNEW how awful he was) are stupid and only care about how likeable their president is.

Of course, back when people said they'd rather have a beer with Dubya than with Gore or Kerry, likeability was hugely important, and the president being a "regular guy" mattered to the point that McCain felt compelled to pick someone like Palin because she was so folksy and charming.

They want it both ways.

My parents went with a slightly more reasonable version than that. They hate Obama, but they recognized that the GOP totally lost voters on their social issues - although they then played it off like the Democrats just made everyone think that the GOP would do horrible things like take away abortion rights, etc. And I was like... "So close. Yet so far."
