It's just kind of astounding to me that the cognitive dissonance completely escapes them.

I can see that. I guess the two are kind of inseparable to me, so it's weird that others manage to do so. (Which isn't to say that the actions of the Israeli government is related to Jewish people or anything, but more that Jewish people are a really intrinsic part of the Israeli state.)
