Thank you for this post.

For those in NYC who are still without power, hot water, etc.: the New York Sports Club is allowing people to use their showers for free, as well as charge cell phones, hang out, etc. The article provides a link to their site with the various NYSC locations.

I'm okay in Brooklyn. There were mostly uprooted trees. Unfortunately, a couple in my neighborhood died because a tree fell on them while they were walking their dog. During the hurricane.

I also live on two of the few suspended train lines so I'm not even remotely planning on venturing into the city. My mom has to work in New Jersey for the next few days because of Wall Street being all flooded, and fortunately, her boss is paying for her hotel stay.

It's a weird feeling. Like, it can be a typical day, but it's not.

Man, I can't judge at all. Back in the middle of Isabel, I had to take the family dog out in it (he was being super insistent that he needed to go and we couldn't talk him out of it). I tried to time it in the lull between storm bands and tried to not venture too far from the house, though it wasn't as if our house wasn't surrounded by tall oaks and that one hadn't already fallen on it at that point. *headdesk*

So there but for the grace, etc. My condolences to the couple's families. :(

Thanks for this post - it's good to see how much is being done in the face of so much damage. And it's *great* to see people checking in. Stay safe, everybody!

Still no power where I am in Southwestern CT. I have power at work, none at home. One of my friends got back power yesterday evening, so will go over there for shower this evening. She's on same feed as the elderly housing and police station, so pretty well all crews in town had been working on getting that section restored first. Now they'll move on to rest. Last estimate I had was Tuesday for power restoration, but that was general "everybody gets power". since I was in the LAST section to come on last two storms, I'm guessing I'm in that Tuesday estimate.

I did see 5 HydroQuebec trucks fueling up at gas station. Since the friend had only seen crews from Alabama and the official town thing said there were six crews in town total as of noon, I'm guessing the HydroQuebec guys I saw at 1 are probably replacement crews coming in.

the other crew we've seen was from Alabama! Cl&P got turned down for a merger with another utility late last year based on having insufficient staffing for disasters. They basically were maintaining only bare minimum for routine maintenance. so if we had a bad rainstorm, nevermind a hurricane, they had to call in crews from out of state. They've been relying way to much on the bordering states so if anything does wrong where those crews aren't available, they're bringing in people from 1000 miles away.

I attended an anime convention around the time Katrina hit New Orleans. Our Dallas hotel was full of reserve rescue persons from as far as Nevada.
