I wish people would stop describing any one oppression as "the civil rights issue of our time," as if all other civil rights issues were completely resolved, but it is pretty rare and awesome for such a high-profile mainstream U.S. politician to make a statement like this. I hope the administration follows through with actual policy (for example, despite all the celebration over the end of DADT, the military still doesn't accept openly trans people).

MTE. We're still right in the thick of the gay rights struggle, and there are plenty of others on the horizon (I think mental health could be a big one). But I'm happy he's being so unabashedly trans-positive.

Who knows if this is accurate (caveat: it's an internet comment, not actual reporting), but I do wonder if second- and third-hand reports are jumping to interpret the pool reporter's account a little too rigidly (the pool reporter noted that much of the conversation was inaudible).

That aside (and regardless of whether the linked comment is true or not), I agree with your comment wholeheartedly.

This is awesome to hear from the VP. ia that trans* rights/protections aren't necessarily THE civil rights issue of our time but it's one that's often overlooked even by Dem politicians, despite the appallingly huge number of trans women in particular who are verbally and physically assaulted or killed. Trans identities are still seen as so essentially weird and foreign by the average cis person that politicians aside from Mr. Fierce VP here do tend to ignore them altogether
