Upward mobility for everyone is a pipedream. Whilst the gap between rich and poor continues to grow the higher the bar becomes for lifting oneself out of poverty.
No matter how the cloth is cut there are always going to be some who are in a position that reliance on the state is necessary - the chronically sick, the disabled, the elderly. They won't just disappear overnight however much the rich would like them to.

The GOP spends months raking Obama over the coals using lies and/or misinformation about his Administration "gutting Welfare" by allowing states waivers in order to come up with their own work-to-welfare programs
They've also spent decades attempting to dismantle Federal offices/programs, such as the Dept. of Education, and now PPACA, because it'd be "better" for states to come up with their own programs as opposed to one-size-fits-all Federal regulations, which are of course evil and bad
Only to turn around and propose essentially the same things
Is it safe to say that 99.9% of shit the GOP complains about at this point is just sheer projection?
