Going on a mission to proselytize your religion is NOT serving your country. And tithing to your church is NOT paying taxes. I hate it so much when they try to equate these things in order to pretend they're good people.
It's not charity, either. For one thing, they hold your temple recommend over your head to get you to pay up. And the church uses a lot of the money to buy real estate, build temples, make investments. They're like a plastic modern version of the Catholic church of the 1500s. The money that does go to charity is to their internal welfare system-- other Mormons.
Boise's temple just got a major, multi-million dollar overhaul, and they put pictures of the open temple in the newspaper , and all I could imagine was all the poor Mormons, forced to pay into this building, despite the fact that they could barely afford rent, or food, or healthcare. But mahogany and marble is so much more important, right?
