King of the Rings targets Beijing
Octagon’s Carlisle nearly passed on shot at Phelps, history

Peter Carlisle must laugh at night. He must smile as he replays the exchange six years ago, the time he tried to pass on a chance at history.
“I can’t.”

That was Carlisle’s response to Bob Bowman, a swim coach at a club in Baltimore. Bowman had called ( Read more... )

Very interesting article. He's really done a lot for the sport of swimming, which is so cool.

I hope he recognizes the pure gold that is Phelps/Lochte and does something with them. They have the rivalry and competitiveness of Phelps/Crocker, but also the fun/goofy dynamic that would be so entertaining to watch. I want to hear what they say to each other when they are laughing so hard on the medal stand and at meets.

I agree so hard! I think that he should think about making a Phelps/Lochte documentary like he did with Phelps/Crocker. I would totally watch it.

I think playing up Phlochte would be even more winningful for the people at Octagon, because they compete in several distances/races and Ryan's always so very close. I don't know who manages Reezy but this could be very interesting, for both fans and the managers. Plus, they're also young, cute and probably have more staying power than the Phelps/Crocker thing.

So take note if you're reading this, Peter Carlisle!

Also...he's 40? wtf. also, major aww for biking to school with his son.

But thanks for the article! It does a bit in humanising the Peter Carlisle and thems people, who most would probably view as robotic money machines.

“There’s no script for this stuff,” Carlisle said. “Even if everyone says, ‘You’re crazy. No one wants to watch 48 minutes of Michael Phelps or Katie Hoff.’

haha, tell that to all the people who bought that phelps dvd

Good for him for getting the deals these athletes need to support themselves and focus on what they do best - train hard, compete, and bring joy to the rest of us while they do while they're young enough and fit enough to do it. Odd to think about but that really is something you used to rarely ever see in sports marketing outside the big pro team sports - football (either type), basketball, baseball, etc., except for a tiny blip during Olympic years.
