Have you ever read 'Queen of Camelot' by Nancy McKenzie? Originally it was two books, 'The Child Queen' and 'The High Queen', but more recently the editors compiled it into the one volume.
Anyway, it's the Arthurian legends, but told from Gwen's point of view. It's one of the reason why I try to hold out faith that the writers will do *something* ( Read more... )

I'm going to admit to a potentially embarrassing secret here: I've never read any of the original stories or adaptations of them. I'd really like to, but don't know where to start.

I'd like something that stays as close to the legend as possible, but with modern vocabulary and writing style. Are any of the books you guys mentioned like that? Or should I just try to get through the original stories first? Or something else?

Most of the originals are available in decent translations by Penguin/Oxford Classics/Everyman etc.

You're welcome. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask away; I might be able to help you as I'm currently making my way through all the medieval stories. :)

Seconding both of these enthusiastically! "Sword at Sunset" is top of my favourite Arthurian novels followed very closely by Mary Stewart's Merlin cycle.

I will second some of those, namely Mary Stewart's books and THE DARK IS RISING, and I'll throw in The Mists of Avalon for good measure.

M. K. Hume's Arthurian Trilogy is pretty amazing, and she's also starting a prequel series called Prophecy which goes into Merlin's life. The first one of that series is already out, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next!
