wow, Christopher Tolkien comes off as elitist and clueless. I've read The Silmarillion, I've read Unfinished Tales and Hurin and Leaf by Niggle, ferchrissake, and they are missing the storytelling that makes The Hobbit special and Lord of the Rings extraordinary. And while the movies aren't perfect, they're also extraordinary and he's blind not to see it. /rant.

additionally, while I can sympathize with the Tolkien Estate's feelings, I kind of feel like it's the same thing as when a musician has a one-hit wonder they're not fond of that defines their career. yes, it sucks that the work you love best will never receive that kind of attention, but at least you're a: making more money than lots of people will ever see and b: still potentially attracting attention to your more beloved and obscure work.

cannot sympathize with movie haters, be they on the internet or Tolkien's kids themselves tbh. the movies are way more loyal to the books than most popular adaptations I've seen (see: Harry Potter), and they are definitely in the spirit of the books. and what's more, they stand on their own as great movies, not just a visual representation of what you've read.
