Because Ilana is a compassionate and magnanimous person, and she managed to look beyond her grief and anger and be kind to him. She'd be a lesser person if she'd shot him.

IA, I liked and respected her character MUCH more after that scene. It spoke well of her humanity. Ilana is awesome and Ben is lucky because I don't think some of the other Losties would've been so compassionate.

I like Ben but I wouldn't have minded if this happened.
