Harry sacrificing himself is one of the most awesome moments in all of the books I've read. He doesn't really have a choice. He's been brought up just so that he can "die" at that moment. It's so heartbreaking :(
It reminds me of a poster that I saw at my school this week outside of a Peace and Justice professors door that said "The cost of war/the price of peace" and had pictures of people who had died presumably in our wars in the Middle East, though I'm not sure. Just that they sacrificed their lives to the cause of making the world a better place.

Well, even though their personal sacrifices don't mean much in the whole of the universe and all of time and space, what they do and their actions they take matter in their presents. In that sense, I think it is related to the theme of choices in the series. the characters choose to make these sacrifices because of moral responsibility even though these choices bring suffering sometimes. That's why they are defined by their actions, because they have the free will to choose otherwise.
