Because Fox took so long to renew Glee, they couldn't do The Glee Project during the end of the previous Glee season. Without knowing Glee was renewed, they didn't have a prize. So they announced they weren't doing a cycle this summer, but stopped short of saying it was really cancelled. I think they were looking into filming it in the fall, or skipping a year and doing one next summer (since Glee got that two-year renewal), but I guess they recently decided not to go that route.

Because of Cory's death? Maybe they were scheduled to announce this today regardless of his death (an unexpected event). The way Oxygen operates isn't the same way as Fox and/or Glee does. Monteith's death doesn't affect TGP much other than not having a "big name Glee person" guesting in the case it was renewed.
