What kind of French high street brands are you looking at, OP? I just bought two jackets from Comptoir des Cotonniers for €50 each (thanks to the sale, I could never afford their stuff otherwise) and they're really great.
Sezanne, Sandro, Ba&Sh, The Kooples, Musies Paris.
I like the fact that the stuff is relatively stylish, and looks relatively comfortable with really great colourways. I really can't stand ecru or white, or plain, too bright colours (my skin is sallow so I'm more of a dark autumn colour wheel). So I've decided to lean in and buy, really. I don't need much clothing, and my clohtes are coming to the end of their cycle (even with mending they are falling apart), so I'm going for quality.
Yeah, I'm trying to do this as well (and failing since I just bought some stuff from H&M yesterday, sigh). It's less French and more Italian, but Yoox's sale section always has great bargains. I've got some really nice dresses from a few Italian brands for less than €30.
