There's a new Captain. Who now has a license to go complain to the referee about supposed offsides after goals, oh dear.

Torhüter @Manuel_Neuer ist neuer Kapitän. Mehr gleich auf https://t.co/TThxdWhKGZ. #DieMannschaft pic.twitter.com/jRQDk17AsU

Why would you make a goalkeeper a captain? jazzypom September 1 2016, 15:09:45 UTC
I don't understand that at all. Why not a CB or a CM?

Well, we've had that before. Kahn was a captain too, so were Schumacher and Sepp Maier a few times, and Neuer has captained the team before (in fact he has almost as many matches as Captain as Schweinsteiger did, what with the injuries). And he's not precisely a keeper who stays attached to his goal.

A lot of the internet and some of the media is crying out for Boateng though, partly it would have been "symbolic". I wonder if that's not the reason why Löw didn't go with Boateng, so there wouldn't be a second round of "do you want him to be your neighbour?", combined with people going on about him only being chosen for symbolism - at some point, Boateng seemed understandably fed up with the whole recent discussion.

True, half the time he's in the midfield, etc.
