As connorblond says, it's one of the two most common names, the other being Schmidt/Schmitt/Schmitz. Last names first developed from people being called by their profession to distinguish them from others; "Müller" is the miller, while "Schmied" is the smith, and those were both just about the only omnipresent occupations since the Middle Ages, apart from farming obviously.
