I think the articles raises a few good points. You can't expect every professional football player to watch everyone else play and to judge their ability. So it's logical that the big names are chosen by their peers too. But it's a shame that Atletico was completely overlooked. I mean it's not like they are that low profile before their amazing last season, they won the Europa League twice.

Some players at least won something: Courtois just won the Best Belgian in a foreign competition.

I would assume players follow other clubs (especially the ones in the same competitions). Managers even more so. Hm, I do think they're a "low-profile", though. Not a low-profile in quality and the competitions they participate (and the games they play), but low-profile media-wise. I wouldn't be surprised if many didn't even know most of Atleti's players' names, lol. So I guess in a way I understand that they don't even cross other players' minds when they're voting, because they think of big-name players. However, it's unacceptable for committees to overlook them. Although in the case of LFP awards the technical committee did their job - Atleti players got nominated in all categories -, but apparently the bitter managers didn't vote for them.

I say this is probably the most hipster footie article ever. Don't get me wrong, I do agree that Atleti players deserve more recognition, but not Diego Simeone tho. I remember Simeone was the cheating, diving, theatrical prick and one of the most despicable player back then, it's amazing that now he got so  much love as a coach *Thanks to the footie Hipsters*. And all of his cheating tricks actually shows now in some of his Atleti players as well. If Atleti can maintain their performance & play 'cleaner' football, it's just a matter of time they will get better recognition.

I'd argue that that logic applies to Chelsea as well. Mou may not have been a famous player but is there a team (apart from Stoke City) that's dirtier than Chelsea? People diving all the time, Cahill's kick on Harry Kane that should have got a red card, Diego Costa escaping a red card countless times. Yet, Mou was also on the coach list (and his team with vastly more money was beaten by Atletico, came third in the PL and didn't win a single trophy).

And I'm saying this as someone who loves Mou.

I don't know how Simeone was as a player, but I do not see how this is relevant to his coaching abilities and achievements. Also, people change.

Yeah, Simeone played for Atletico Madrid - he and Torres played for a while before he left in 2005 (Torres was his captain!) and Torres left for Liverpool two years after. Simeone is known as the guy whose simulation at the World Cup in 98 I think? Got Beckham a red card and sent off the pitch ( ... )
