"People often speak about the Dortmund ‘project’ in that context but I don’t really like that word,” Hummels said. “It’s too unemotional and sounds so technical."

this seems to be a common problem with the press describing German footballers. I remember on the Troll's birthday fifa wrote an article that opened with describing him as clinical and machine like and I was like wtf. the only footballer as weird as Thomas off the pitch is Zlatan and there's probably no one as weird as him on.

awwww what a cutie tho. I think the other thing is that having him as the bvb captain is also good for die mannschaft. he's from bayern so he grew up playing with those players and is close to them and he's besties with the Schalke captain. that really helps the supporter rift between the three big clubs in the buli

A lot of the things I read and watched in English about the national team this World Cup was about a "machine" and "clinical" "ruthlessness". I honestly think they just go through their standard descriptions of Germans and Germany (although with somewhat toned-down war rhetoric these days) because they think that their audience has the same prejudices and will see it as true.

God, yes, Thomas Müller. I mean, his single defining characteristic when playing seems to be that not even his teammates or his coach can predict what he is going to do at any given time, so the opponents can stop bothering even trying.

I found the article, and apparently the language they used was: "Thomas Muller is not exactly renowned for silky technique, mazy dribbles round opposing defenders or outrageous tricks and flicks. The Germany No13’s glowing reputation is instead based on determination, effort and tireless running, attributes that rapidly won him a special place in the hearts of Bayern Munich fans. What’s more, and remarkably for a player so closely associated with Germany’s biggest club, the affection for the grinning goalscorer is felt by the country’s entire footballing family.

It would be fair to describe Muller as devoid of frills, and the intensity of his play means he is not regarded as particularly witty or charismatic outside Germany ( ... )

No frills? Have they seen him try to get a penalty, or get into someone's face when he's energised?

And agreed on the "superstars". I watched the final afterwards in the BBC commentary, and when the former players doing it put together their XI of the tournament beforehand, they had I don't know how many Germans in it. All of them were just "sure, Lahm is the best on the position there is, and we can just stick any of the German midfielders in and it will work". Perhaps it's really the lack of personality cult that is done around individual players here that makes them look less like "superstars". I mean, spending one's free time on the wife's horse farm and playing with the dogs isn't what superstars aren't supposed to do either.
