? She isn't saying she wants to pre-emptively suspend the match. It says "Aguirre pide suspender la final de Copa 'si se pita al himno y a la bandera'" so IF it happens. But yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I'm an American, so freedom of speech/expression is a big part of my values. That being said, I don't think the mayor/president of Madrid really has that much power anyway, it's not like she can actually do anything about it. -.-

So, idk, nothing to be super mad about in my book. If that's what she thinks should happen, well, she has freedom to say so. W/e. As long as it isn't what actually happens.

*P.S. Love the use of Rhett Butler there. :DD

You're right, I misinterpreted it and already removed that sentence.
Since it's being played in Madrid, I don't know how much power she has though... Agree with the fact that she can say whatever she wants (although as the highest representative of the Comunidad de Madrid, she should know better!) as long as it doesn't happen.
What makes me really mad is that this is yet another stance from the central government towards denying the Catalans and the Basques' right to demand their independence, thinly disguising it as a football-related problem.

And thank you!! :D

Well...now that you mention it, my mind is starting to change. I don't think she should have said it. You're right, she's in a representative government position--she should be watching what she says. And she definitely should not be polarizing the situation or being oppressive like verses said below.

My initial reaction was "meh, like she can do anything about it, w/e" but now that I think about it more...yeah, I think you're right. edit: And yes, I agree about disguising it as a football-related problem. It's way bigger than that.

I really like the Basque govt's response to it:

Para la portavoz del Ejecutivo vasco, se trata de unas declaraciones "lamentables , que no benefician a nadie, ni a su comunidad autónoma ni al deporte". A su juicio, "lo importante no es mezclar deporte con política" porque "hacemos flaco favor si a unos deportistas les pedimos de otras connotaciones que no tienen nada que ver con sus funciones".

^Perfect disdaining response and hits all the high notes of why Aguirre is off her rocker.

I totally get a change of venue on the basis of a legitimate, serious concern for safety, but this isn't an attempt to avoid people burning cars or stabbing each other. This is oppressive - and incredibly hypocritical, given that Basque and Catalan cultures have been insulted by other fans without reprisal in the past. Do I think Athletic and Barcelona should respect the crown they're playing for? Absolutely. Do I think "Athletic" and "Barcelona" are synonymous with their rudest Ultras? No. If the clubs show respect and encourage their fans to show respect, it would be incredibly unfair to punish them for something beyond their control. If certain fans are breaking the law, then kick them out, for fuck's sake. Don't nix the entire match.

So I guess she confidently forgot the times when games at Camp Nou had to be played without audiance after teh croud refused to sing the Spanish anthem? Similiar or what? This is an absolute disgrace. Let's forfight peoples right to express themselves and their views because someone else might get offended! This is redicolous. I hope someone in power will comment on this.

WHAT. THE FUCK. I totally agree, self-fulfilling prophecy. I mean, not that I know anything about the current political climate in Spain but if people weren't planning anything before, they're sure as hell going to be angry now!

Now I'm pissed off that Aguirre was at Real Madrid's celebrations, although I did think she had crazyface at the time. XP

That's what I thought too ... now you can count on there being a rection on the stands after what she said. Even those who did not plan to do it. Simple reasoning "You try to shut us up? See if this works!"

Not RM fault at all. There is a crazy bunch that comes to Camp Nou so I guess it happens everywhere. I really hope that noone will try to mix Real Madrid into this shit really.

That's just standard procedure because she's like the eviqualent of the city's mayor. She received Atlético as well after they won the Europa League. Real Madrid have nothing to do with this. (Well, not with this part of the story anyway, but they did refuse the final to be held at Santiago Bernabéu, that's why they're playing it at the Vicente Calderón. A decision which I didn't approve of as well by the way.)

I'm sure she's not affiliated with the club, I just don't want her at our party! XP

I thought this was the Barca community at first and was thrown off by the "not a barca supporter "bit but eh... on topic:

It's not a good idea to say this, no, but it's no surprise.
