I don't think he can get away with anything by citing cultural differences. Just because I use "negro" in an affectionate way doesn't mean that I can't say it in a hurtful, derogatory manner. It depends on the context. He can say he didn't mean it in an offensive way, but not that he didn't know it could be used in a racist manner.
I don't know. Just because it's not offensive in Uruguay doesn't mean Evra's concerns should be dismissed or that there should be no consequence. Racist behavior can occur without conscious intent. We don't know exactly what Suarez said and i don't know what those consequences should be, but i'm glad it's being investigated further. (and i say this as a Suarez fan - the situation is pretty disappointing. I hope he learns from it).
Liverpool have let it be known they will ask the FA to take action against Evra if the governing body concludes that Suárez has no case to answer. However, the latest revelations throw up the possibility that both players have given a legitimate account of what happened, rather than it being a case of one man's word against another.
Really? Yes, let 's make victims of racist abuse even more reluctant to report incidents.
Taking note of the cultural context is incredibly important, and I'm glad the FA is doing that. HOWEVER I think it's important to consider the environment as well- two big rivals, a close game etc. And under those circumstances, I'm less inclined to think that it was said in a playful, friendly way.
often in the same way someone could be called "pal" or "mate"
except evra is not suarez's mate or pal tho..like there's a big difference between calling your best friend who is dark skinned"negro or negrito" and then there's you calling someone negro (attached with usually another bad word) in a racist way as well. plus this game was very heated and it didn't look like evra nor suarez were being ~friendly~.
