Diego Maradona has described Luís Fabiano's second goal for Brazil against the Ivory Coast yesterday as a "double handball" and said it was "shocking" to see the referee, Stéphane Lannoy, laughing with the player afterwards.

The Argentina coach, renowned for his "Hand of God" goal against England at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, said: "This one [Fabiano's goal] was with his arm, he brought it down with his arm, it's very evident. I think there was a double handball."

"What's tragicomic is the referee's smile afterwards. When I scored the goal against England, I didn't see the referee laugh. He had so many doubts, he looked at his linesmen, there was no fourth referee at that time, he looked at the crowd to see if they gave him a hand.

"But yesterday, the referee went [back to the centre circle] laughing and that's what shocked us all. So if you saw it why didn't you penalise it?

Luís Fabiano, having put Brazil ahead in the 25th minute, scored his second goal five minutes after half-time. Elano got a third for the five-times champions before Didier Drogba headed one back for the Africans. The 3-1 victory was enough for Brazil to qualify for the knockout stages with a game to spare.

"Brazil are not playing well but they settle their matches and for that reason they are still the big favourites," added Maradona, whose own side have also qualified for the knockout stages with a game to go. Argentina take on Greece in Polokwane tomorrow.
