It's amusing to me to imagine what would happen if he had said those things about a newly elected male senator. I imagine it would suggest some sort of personal feud or power struggle. It would probably look like a gauntlet was being thrown down to dispute the other man's abilities. It would look bitter.

The sad thing is that it looks less outrageous in the face of prevailing political paternalism. Oh yeah, he's just trying to be helpful. Sure..
