The imminent whitewashing of The Hunger Games heroine

What I was really hoping for was unknowns in the major roles so that they could pick people who actually stay true to the books. Once you start looking at actresses already working, you're going to have a problem finding anyone who actually fits the (relatively diverse) descriptions.

I agree with this comment. It took me a while to realize it, because I guess I wasn't thinking very clearly, but a lot of what I like about THG is the way the gender roles are flipped around so much of the time. The racial ambiguity isn't something I even realized until I started hearing about the proposed whitewashing of the characters, and in retrospect I appreciate that as well. I am not looking forward to what the movie is probably going to do, though, which is reinstate the expected gender roles, turn Katniss' prime motivation into romantic love, and make all of the (main, good) characters white and pretty.

I had a smidgen of optimism about this movie when I first heard about it, but as time progresses...BAH.

One of the first things I noticed in THG was the lack of sexism, which is sad. One of the things I'm worried about is them adding stuff to the movies that will make the characters seem more stereotypical than they are in the books.

I'm so wary about this being made into a movie at all - I found the book incredibly disturbing and it's not as though I don't watch CSI and Criminal Minds regularly.

Then with this on top of that... I won't be surprise if it ends up whitewashed. After all, all you have to do is dye their hair and that'll satisfy enough people, right? >_<

I loved those books. I will be very disappointed if they ruin the movie :(

I love the books but I can't see how they'd make a very good movie and I don't trust Hollywood anyway. I'm disappointed in the white-washing, not surprised, but disappointed.
