YES! There were reforms in Romania back in the day, and they did this to Rroma, Hungarians and any kind of minority. They were not only forced to deny their heritage, but also to never mention any kind of cultural ties. Now, it is worse in a way, because they are singled out for any kind of police investigation, they are always prime suspects. It's terrible. And there is other stuff.
yeah this was like my family as well (i'm canadian)and they had no idea how much roma was actually in our heritage because they hid it when they immigrated. we were able to trace it back and find a bunch of hidden/forgotten family members and such though.
