An iVillage slide show featuring birth control advice for women, sent in by Corina C., is a good demonstration of the norming of a particular life course.
Because You Don’t Want to Advertise Your Sex Life Methods such as IUDs, injectables and implants are more discreet than, say, diaphragms and pills that hang around the medicine cabinet or are left lying on a bedside table where a snooping visitor might find them."
Discreetness is SO the most important thing I think about when choosing the most appropriate birth control. God forbid anyone actually knows I'm having, you know, the sex. With a person with a penis.
Other things this slide show has taught me: Women in their 20s are ditzes who can't remember things like take a daily pill or change a patch only women in their 20s have multiple non-monogamous relationships all women make babies in their 30s and then no more only people in their 50s get a divorce
That said, though, the thought of taking birth control pills really freaks me out. =/ I know plenty of people use them without adverse side effects, but I really don't like the idea of potentially fucking around with my hormones.
On the other hand, I don't know if I would ever feel comfortable just relying on condoms.
Ugh, why does female birth control have to be so much more complicated than male birth control? So unfair. =(
Agreed so hard on the "not wanting to fuck with hormones" department. And condoms have a typical use failure rate of 15%, so that's not going to be enough either. A copper IUD maybe? Unless there's something wrong copper IUDs that I'm not aware of, because otherwise I can't explain why so few people use them.
I can't wait until that promised male birth control pill. The one in development doesn't even fuck with their hormones and may only have to be taken monthly, iirc.
I've heard about the bleeding and cramping, but a quick google search leads to me to a (ten year old) article saying that it doesn't lead to infertility, and infertility isn't mentioned among common side effects of copper IUDs in the Wikipedia article either.
Thanks to this article, I now realize I'm too fucking irresponsible and forgetful to be taking a daily pill as a 20-something woman! Maybe I should stop taking my other daily medications too while I'm at it!
Boy howdy this sure was enlightening. I'll be sure to stop by my gyno and ask to be suited up with a BC method that I've never been physically comfortable with!!

Seriously. There are just supposed to be no signs that women have sex. Except a swollen belly, if they're married and in their 30s.

The infertility possibility is why most doctors will not put someone in their 20s on them.
