yeah i haven't mentioned it directly to anyone in my family, especially since some on my dad's side are born again. my immediate family has recently taken up going to church every sunday and i've politely declined by sleeping in. i went to church on easter so my dad wouldn't cry or anything :/

The sugar skulls thing is a really good example, given its recent super-trendiness as something everyone and their brother is appropriating all over the place. The removal of the crucifix symbolism is something I hadn't looked too deeply into but that's a good point, as well.

It's about how white people ignore the the significance of religion in nonwhite communities.

This, 100%

It's amazing how many "allies" think it's a-ok to use sugar skulls all over the place. :(

YES. Oh my god. And get really really defensive about it if you try to discuss it with them or bring it up at all, as "maybe this is a little problematic...?"

"WHAT. No. It's just sugar skulls. That's different/but I like it!/well, I mean, EVERYONE appropriates..."

Good job, "ally".

Thanks for this. As a white queer person with a rather, uhhhh, complicated relationship with Christianity, I know I have a lot of shit to work out when it comes to dealing with the anger I feel over stuff that happened to me without taking it out on the whole of Christianity (esp. Christians who are far less privileged than I am)
