I had no idea of the significance of the Black Hills. What a great article--it really adds an interesting perspective to the discussion. Thanks for posting. I hope it's widely read.

this is a great article.

I grew up in Central NY and like most people in the area I was appalled by the state of Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, a Superfund site after two centuries of abuse that continues today.

it wasn't until college that I learned that it's also a site of deep spiritual significance to the entire Iroquois Confederacy because it is where a major peace treaty was signed.

somehow, this pretty significant bit of history (and it's significance still today) is always left out in the American narrative of the lake. we are surrounded by sites like these nationwide, and we are blind to it. :-/
