Isn't it fairly well established that perpetrators will intentionally try to involve alcohol consumption in an assault because they know that people will be more prone to blame the victim?

It's also fairly well established that most people don't seem to give a shit about placing the blame on the correct shoulders when there's a woman around to bear it.

Well established, yes. Well known, no.

I don't like it, but it seems like the only way to really reduce the propensity of men to rape is to turn it into something deeply shameful and low status. Something you can't brag about in the locker room because then all the other guys will judge you for being "so unattractive that you have to resort to that." People respond more to being objects of scorn than objects of fear.

But apparently everyone thinks victim blaming is a better strategy.

Men rape for plenty of reasons other than bragging rites.

Edited because I misread your comment. I do agree that eradicating the Rape is Awesome and Manly and Cool meme is a key part of reducing the frequency with which men rape.

It really, really frustrates me, because I can remember learning about all the things that I shouldn't do, because I was a girl. But I really cannot remember anything directed at what the boys my age shouldn't do. Because really, you have to go further than 'rape is bad!' to get the message across, that's obvious.

Why there isn't some sort of larger movement to address this in schools, I don't even know.

Well, in the US, the answer would be because that would necessitate talking about sex in school. And heaven forbid we do that!

Thanks, hometown, for reminding me of one of the many reasons why I moved away. Apparently banning salvia and K2 is much more important than PREVENTING RAPE, christ.

trigger warning for mention of rape (just in case) fruhlings August 3 2010, 12:26:00 UTC
I will never report my rape for this reason. Plus, it'd be way too traumatic for me to see my ex in court. And he'd probably get off free, too. :/
