This articulates why I've never been particularly fond of Winehouse as an artist. Yeah, she has a nice voice but if I wanted Motown, I'd listen to Motown. Such appropriation isn't exclusive to Amy though and there should be more people calling out other artists who do the same.

Yeah I preferred her 1st album. It felt like a more original style, less obviously appropriated from 60s girl groups and soul music.

I agree. At least then she didn't have a 'uniform' to go with her image

From the Eric Clapton and the Police on up, it's hard to find an white English pop or rock artist that doesn't rip off reggae. And if they don't, they rip off the blues.

While appropiation is important to point out, Amy Winehouse is not the only white artist to engage in appropriation nor is it a new thing. I am bothered that out of all people they decided to pick on a white woman when white male artists are much more likely to shamelessly appropriate, waterdown, and fetishize the music and overall culture from people of color. (ex. Elvis Presley, Justin Timberlake, Asher Roth, DIPLO)

her bio was ok. not horrible, nothing to write home about, either.

idk, i expect a lot from bios, though. im reading a judy garland biography right now, and it seems like a lot of biographies are fluff.
