How Ratings Boards are Driving Rates of Cosmetic Surgery

Labiaplasty, a plastic surgery in which the labia is reshaped, is on the rise in many Western countries. Usually this means trimming the labia so that it is less “obtrusive” and social pressure, especially from increased exposure to pornography, is blamed for the rise. For reference, see our post on the natural range of labia shapes and sizes (nsfwRead more... )

Yeah pretty much any time I hear people talk about the brutal mutilation of female circumcision I point them to this. It'd be nice to live in a world where people don't have to mutilate their genitals for someone else's pleasure :/

Just a thought though, from what I understand, female circumcision is rarely voluntary and is typically done on young girls. Labiaplasty is a voluntary procedure that is done on informed adults. While I agree that a woman shouldn't change her body for someone else, isn't labiaplasty a bit different from female circumcision in those regards?

Well it's just a different form of it coming under the guise of being voluntary. I'm sure it doesn't feel so voluntary when your friends/boyfriends mock anything but what we perceive as 'normal' vulvas and you feel bad to even show yours.

I get confused when I see most labias. I don't have inner labia at all.

I've thought cosmetic surgery on perfectly normal genitals was really depressing since I first read about it. Didn't know about the Australian Classification Board connection though.

I'm curious- if the Australian classification Board revisted and made more lenient its restrictions- would soft core mags really stop nipping and tucking 'abnormal' labia? I'm sure a few would, to cut costs, but I imagine the more 'unruly' labia minora would be cleaned up anyway.
