"I avoid a lot of pretty nasty situations by keeping to myself and being friends with my friends rather than, like, exert myself to being friends with people I'm competing with all the time. Cause, I wanna win and they wanna win. It's hard to be friends when we're both trying to win, heh, there's only one gold medal!"
This definitely sums up Apolo as well (except for the avoiding situations lolllll). He and Shani's bff-ness is so cute.
Back in the 2006 games, Shani backed out of skating in the team pursuit because he strictly wanted to race individually and that he wasn't even eligible for the team pursuit. He was an alternate, but still, did not want to be tied to the event. Apparently there was a lot of drama, Chad Hedrick didn't help in calming the fires too and gave Shani crap for it. Shani was getting a lot of heat for it too, being called unpatriotic and crap and US Speedskating didn't say a damn thing to defend Shani and his decision.
So Shani was basically fighting a battle against the media and his own "team mates" without any support so he, in return, said screw you guys and turned his back on American media and US Speedskating.
