I was thinking about it myself and took it as a metaphor. Maybe he doesn't like to have things handed to him because growing up he has had things "handed over" to him. Like a lot of things in his past ie. his legacy, Stark Industries, money, etc.
This is exactly what I was thinking of, actually. I look at it as a rather endearing way for Tony to sort of make up for (probably) being a brat when he was growing up (note: I don't know TS's canon from the books, so don't throw things!). He doesn't want people 'serving' him like that anymore because he was, from the looks of it, raised by nannies and Daddy Stark's other employees.
I think it could be taken metaphorically, as above, but I do actually know someone who has a peeve about being handed stuff. Some people think it's rude being handed things; that way, you HAVE to take it rather than it being set down for you to peruse at your leisure.
I rewatched Iron Man after I saw IM2, and I have to say, he doesn't actually get handed things in IM. Even when Pepper gives him the shot of espresso, HE TAKES IT from her.
I think it's just a little OCD quirk... Everyone has one. lol.
I know, it's such a chore, isn't it? I wasn't looking for that specific reason so there will no doubt be evidence to prove me wrong... I mean, doesn't one of the bots hand him the glass-boxed arc reactor? Would that even count? LOL.
I too thought it was another little "I'm Tony Stark, I'm better than you" idiosyncrasy but I actually think it's his worry of getting sick because of his deteriorating heart/body.
The palladium is probably killing his immune system.
The reason I think this is how he kept telling Pepper that she needed to wear a surgical mask until she was over her cold. It was his cutsey way of dealing with what was/is a serious situation.
Now, I could be reading into it and I could be watching WAY to much House MD (love that show) but that's what I feel is the reason behind this new little quirk. Because we sure didn't see this in the first Iron Man.

This is what I thought too. Even though it seems pretty useless because if you're gonna eat strawberries that somebody else touched you're probably more likely to catch something from them :P But yeah, I think it was to protect his failing immune system.
I did some research on palladium poisoning (hi, I write Tony Stark so I needed the research cough) and it screws with the immune system so I can totally see this as a fitting reason. And in the deleted scenes of Iron Man he's seen using the hand sanitizer after greeting some people in Dubai, too, so maybe he's a bit of a germaphobe? Especially after being stuck in a cave for so long where he was covered in dirt, after the life that he had led to before that moment.

I really can't figure out what that is all about...
